Dog treats recalled for possible salmonella contamination

- A few varieties of Loving Pets brand dog treats are being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

Loving Pets said it is voluntarily recalling a limited number of treats, although no injuries or illnesses have been reported.

According to information from the FDA, salmonella can affect animals that eat the treats, as well as humans who handle them.

The recalled products include multiple flavors of Loving Pets Barksters, multiple flavors of Loving Pets Puffsters Snack Chips, and one flavor of Whole Hearted.

The FDA says the possible salmonella contamination was due to a single finished ingredient that was supplied to Loving Pets from a USA based supplier and was identified through Loving Pets' quality control testing procedures.

Loving Pets says it produces its treats in small batches, in order to offer the highest quality and control in safety.

The FDA says pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If a pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, owners should call a veterinarian.

The FDA says healthy people infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, salmonella can result in more serious ailments. Anyone experiencing these symptoms after contact with the recalled product should call a healthcare provider.

Anyone who bought these products may return them to the retailer where the product was originally purchased. For more information, please visit www.LovingPetsProducts.com or https://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm563210.htm?source=govdelivery&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery.
