Monthly Amazon Prime memberships on the rise

Amazon Prime fees are on the rise for customers who are charged on a monthly basis. 

The change in price begins Friday, January 19th. 

According to Amazon's website, the monthly rate is being raised from $10.99 to $12.99. That's a $24 increase for the year, which comes out to a yearly rate of about $156.

Meanwhile, the discounted Prime Student monthly plan is being raised form $5.49 to $6.49. That's a $12 increase per year with a yearly expense of $77.88.

At this point, annual membership fees are not being changed and will remain at $99. Annual memberships for students will stay at $49.  

The membership allows customers to get free-two day shipping, same day shipping, as well as Prime Video, Prime Music and Prime Reading. 

According to techcrunch.com the increase will go into effect for current subscribers on the first renewal payment after February 18.
