TSA checkpoint lines frustrating travelers nationwide

This has not been a good week for the TSA. It is being blamed for major delays at airports in Atlanta, Phoenix and Chicago. Some officials even threatened to ground the TSA if it does not make a course correction soon.

Although TIA was not directly affected by those troubles, travelers to, from and through TIA were not completely spared the headaches.

"I've experienced a 4-hour wait at the longest, where everyone has to take their damn shoes off, and all that," said traveler James Pope.

Frustration has gotten so bad, #ihatethewait has taken off on social media. The TSA and Department of Homeland Security are aware of the problems, but say safety is still number one.

"Recent events across the world confirm the continued need for vigilance when it comes to aviation security," said Jeh Johson, Secretary of Homeland Security.

The TSA expects a spike in travelers this summer. Couple that with a decrease in TSA agents budgeted over the last few years, and it could mean even longer lines.

TSA now recommends arriving at least 2 hours early for every flight.

"There needs to be improvements everywhere," Pope said.

The good news in Tampa, airport officials say wait times have been kept to a minimum, though they still recommend investing in the TSA pre-check. It costs $85.
