TAMPA (FOX 13) - A drug commonly used to treat tapeworm could be the answer to defeating the Zika virus.
A research team, which included members from Florida State University, has found the drug can stop the Zika virus from reproducing in the body. The study also found a new drug being tested to treat liver disease may be able to prevent Zika from damaging brain cells, which causes birth defects.
Since these drugs already have FDA approval, they could be used to fight Zika much sooner than any new drugs.
The research was published today in the journal Nature Medicine.
