Healthful food for kids available at Summer BreakSpots

- As Florida schools get out for the summer, more than one million students who rely on free and reduced-price meals will have to look elsewhere for food.

Because of this, the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is once again beginning its Summer BreakSpot program, which provides free meals and snacks for kids at thousands of locations statewide.

Department spokesperson Kinley Tuten says Summer BreakSpot provided 16 million meals at more than 42 hundred schools from June through August last year, and the need always exists.

All children 18 and under, who come from low-income families, are eligible for the program.

There are dozens of Summer BreakSpots in the Bay Area. To find your nearest Summer BreakSpot location, visit the website www.SummerFoodFlorida.org.

"It is really important to keep their nutrition going during the summer months and keep kids healthy and ready to learn for the next school year. Nutrition is the foundation to academic success," Kinley Tuten, spokesperson for the Florida Department of Agriculture said.
