Three reasons to register your electronic gifts

- You've just unwrapped a new gadget and you're charged up with the anticipation of a child, so the last thing you want to do is paperwork. But, it’s more important than ever to quickly register the gifts you’ve gotten—especially the electronics.

Here are three good reasons to register products as soon as you buy/receive them:

1.)   RECALLS

Filling out the card (or the online form) that comes with a new product is the best way to learn of defects. Let’s face it: many recalls are scary – and pose hazards to your health. When a recall is issued, registered consumers are among the first to learn of the problem and (perhaps more important) the fix.

2.)   CLASS ACTIONS

If a flaw is so dangerous that a fellow product owner files a class action lawsuit, the database of registered consumers is among the first places the court goes to notify owners who might have a claim. While it’s true that consumers’ rights have diminished in class actions (and some settlements are absurd), it’s still smart to be in the know when a product you own is subject to legal action.

3.)   WARRANTIES

Some manufacturers tie their warranty to registration. Filling out the form isn’t always required, but in some cases, such as a 55” Hisense TV we recently saw, some warranty benefits are only offered to consumers who register. The Hisense TV comes with a two-year warranty without registration; those who register receive a four-year warranty. To us, that bonus is worth the couple of minutes needed to register. 

A quick note about long registration forms. Some questions are optional. When a registration form veers into prying demographic info from you, such as level of education or occupation, that information is generally not required. Carefully read the directions and, if you are concerned about divulging too much information, only answer the questions that are required.
