13-year-old saves family from fire

- Firefighters called a 13-year-old boy a hero after he saved his family from a burning building.

Teenager Sean Breaux told FOX 5 News he was walking home from school to the Chatsworth Apartments in Chamblee Friday afternoon when he saw his building going up in flames.

“I dropped my stuff, and ran down. I thought I was about to lose my family,” Sean said, almost in tears. “The whole top of the roof was on fire.”

“I wasn’t really thinking about it. I just wanted everybody to get out,” he said.

His aunt and his young cousin were still inside the apartment, unaware of the fire.

“We heard a bamming on the door, and didn’t know what it was,” said Aunt Tanisha Breaux. “He said, ‘Get out, the apartment's on fire!’”

Tanisha Breaux, her daughter, and her nephew were able to escape as everyone else rushed out of the building.

DeKalb firefighters said no one was hurt. Ten units were destroyed and nine families lost their homes.

Firefighters still don’t know the cause behind the fire, which started shortly before 5 p.m. Video from SKYFOX 5 showed smoke and flames shooting into the sky.

The teenager is being called a hero by the DeKalb County Fire Department.

“I thank God for him. He’s the real hero to me,” Tanisha Breaux said.

“I feel real happy everybody is out and safe,” Sean Breaux said. “But now I can’t go back in my house... I can’t do [anything],” he said.

The American Red Cross is helping the nine families displaced.
