A trip for a bag of ice turns into a $150,000 Powerball prize

- A trip to the convenience store for a bag of ice turned into a $150,000 win for Brady Medlock of Gastonia when he made a spur of the moment decision to buy a Powerball ticket.

Lottery officials said Medlock, a truck driver, never imagined something like this would happen.

Medlock was sitting in his truck Sunday night when he remembered he had bought a ticket for Saturday’s drawing. He checked his ticket and saw that he matched four white balls and the Powerball.

He told Lottery officials he had his wife and daughter check the ticket before he would believe it.

Medlock claimed the prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he received $103,875.

He plans to use the money to pay bills.

Medlock purchased the winning $3 Powerball with Power Play ticket at the Lil Market on Auten Road in Gastonia. The $50,000 prize tripled when the 3X multiplier was drawn for Power Play tickets.

Odds of winning a $50,000 prize are one in 913,129.

North Carolinian’s next chance to win the Powerball jackpot is Wednesday night. The jackpot is an annuity of $292 million or $191.9 million cash.
