Man accused of killing woman, abandoning kids denied bond

- The man accused of shooting a woman and leaving his children at an Ormond Beach shopping center went before a judge Sunday for his first appearance.

Jamal Davis, 35, was denied bond.

Police said officers were called to an apartment on Victoria Gardens Boulevard around 1:13 a.m. Saturday for a report of a woman found dead in her apartment.

Police said the woman was shot to death.

Prior to the call in Port Orange, Ormond Beach Police were called to a crash around 11:30 p.m. Friday, involving Davis.

Police said Davis told officers he left a 1-year-old and 2-year old child at a shopping center. The children were located on Nova Road.  When police were unable to contact their mother, Justine Clawson, they say they contacted the children's grandfather.

The grandfather told police he would find Clawson and come get the children. Police said the grandfather of the children found his daughter unresponsive inside of her apartment in Port Orange.

Davis was interviewed by Port Orange Police. Detectives say he told them that he and Clawson were arguing over their relationship and child custody when the fight turned physical.

Davis told detectives that he used a gun to shoot Clawson at least two times and that he drove his car into a tree in an attempt to kill himself.

Davis was taken to the Volusia County Jail on first-degree murder and child neglect charges.
