Vandals drain 400K gallons from drinking water supply

Thousands of residents in Flagler County are being forced to boil their water, after deputies say vandals drain nearly 400,000 gallons of water.

“This morning when I was getting water for them I noticed that the water wasn't working,” said Keith Brown owner of the Dixie Commons Animal Hospital.

Brown is now stocking up on bottled water to run his business.

“Probably maybe $300 to $400 in revenue was lost due to the water situation,” said Brown.

He's one of nearly 1,700 residents in the Plantation Bay community now under a boil water alert all thanks to vandals.

“They had noticed already that there was potential criminal mischief that took place, where 20 water supplies in vacant properties had been opened up, they're approximately one inch in diameter so they're estimating approximately 400,000 gallons of water was vacated from the system," said James Troiano of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The vacant lots were in the Plantation Reserve Estates community, sheriff's officials showed FOX 35 video of what the water valves look like, they say 20 of them were turned on sometime between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday -- draining nearly 400,000 gallons of water.

"We're looking at a felony criminal mischief charge because of the disruption of services, utilities," Troiano said.

Now deputies with the Flagler County Sheriff's Office begin their investigation to try to get to the bottom of who those vandals were

"We hope that someone has information that will come forward,” Troiano said.
