TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (FOX 13) - Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has ordered the continued suspension of fees and penalties for SunPass and toll-by-plate customers in the aftermath of massive billing failures by a state contractor.
The Florida Department of Transportation will suspend those penalties and fees until June 1 for transactions that occurred through the end of December 2018. Final reminders are now being sent to customers for those transactions.
“Since I’ve been governor, I’ve heard the concerns from citizens and customers of SunPass and the hardships they’ve been facing related to their delayed bills and billing errors by the contractor, Conduent," DeSantis said in a statement. "I’ve directed the Florida Department of Transportation to continue suspending fees and penalties until June 1st."
Conduent's troubles began during a system upgrade, causing the state's tolling system to become backlogged with transactions.
FDOT Secretary Kevin Thibault said the state is assessing $4.6 million in penalties for Conduent's "operational and performance deficiencies."
