Veterans Expressway project includes express lanes

- Tampa traffic can be troublesome, but relief appears to be on the way for Veterans Expressway travelers.

As part of the $380 million widening of the Veterans Expressway, which began in 2013, two lanes will be added in each direction, doubling the highway’s capacity.

One will be a general toll lane, the other an express lane.

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise describes the express lanes as, "special toll lanes that offer drivers a choice to pay a higher toll to bypass heavy traffic in the general toll lanes. The tolls vary depending on traffic conditions in the toll lane."

Similar express lanes exist in several other states, and to our south in Miami Dade.

The expressway expansion will cover 11 miles. Currently, some 150,000 drivers take that roadway every single day. The express lanes are expected to open in 2017.
