FHP: Drunk wrong-way-driving deputy found hiding after crash

- Troopers say a drunk wrong-way driver was hiding in the median of Interstate 75 after slamming into a semi-truck overnight.

According to FHP, it was around 3:30 a.m. when Justin Garrett's Ford Explorer, heading southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75, clipped the truck just north of the Hillsborough-Manatee County line, and kept going.

Troopers responding to the crash soon spotted the heavily damaged SUV, but the driver was nowhere to be found.

With help from deputies and a helicopter, troopers eventually spotted Garrett in the median, trying to hide.  The 29-year-old was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash, DUI, and driving the wrong way.

It was not immediately clear where Garrett may have entered the highway or how long he was driving there.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office later confirmed that Garrett is a deputy sheriff. They say he has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the Florida Highway Patrol investigation.
