Three killed in head-on crash in Lakeland

- Lakeland police said three people died in a head-on crash Saturday night.

The crash happened on Highway 98 near Plaza Drive.

According to police, a southbound Volkswagen driven by 26-year-old Michael Marrero crossed over into the northbound lanes for unknown reasons. Marrero crashed into the front of a Nissan that was traveling northbound.

The driver of the Nissan, 22-year-old Christopher Stewart, and his passenger, 22-year-old Kathrin Pitock, were killed. A second passenger, who hasn't been identified, died at Lakeland Regional Hospital, police said.

Marrero was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital for treatment. His condition is not known.
