Man jailed for 'brutal' beating of 83-year-old mother

- A 60-year-old Clearwater man is facing attempted murder charges for what police are calling the "brutal" beating of his elderly mother.

Daniel Edward Richards is accused of throwing his 83-year-old mother to the floor, then kicking and stomping her after a verbal argument on Monday.

Catherine Richards, 83, is in critical condition at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with multiple broken bones and other internal injuries.

Investigators say Daniel Richards gave them different accounts of how his mother was injured, but "detectives were able to disprove those reports."

Richards was booked into the Pinellas County Jail last night.
