BARTOW, Fla. (FOX 13) - Two children have been killed in a crash in Bartow, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
The crash involving a mini-bike versus a 2019 Chevrolet Z71 pickup truck happened around 4:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the area of Connersville Road and Wellington Place.
The sheriff's office said 12-year-old Charisma Vega and her sister, 9-year-old Kiara Vega, died in the crash.
Sheriff Grady Judd said the children, who legally should not have been riding the mini-bike, drove into the path of the truck, which was driving westbound on Connersville Road.
"We're all devastated because we saw two beautiful children lose their lives and all they were doing is riding a mini-bike," Judd said. "But [they were] riding a mini-bike that's not certified for the road and certainly at that age they can't ride it anyway."
He continued, "It's a tragedy of monumental proportions, one that we wish never occurred."
The sheriff said the initial investigation has found the driver of the truck was not at fault in the accident.
