Elderly Tampa man beaten at home dies; charges increased

- The 81-year-old Tampa man who was beaten robbed at his home last month has died as a result of the attack. His accused attacker now faces a first degree murder charge.

Tampa police said Friday they have increased the charges against 47-year-old Carlos Alberto Cordero, who was apparently working for 81-year-old Alfred Watton as a handyman.

Police said Watton, who was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a retired teacher and counselor, was found in his backyard Wednesday, August 17. He was badly beaten and his wallet and vehicle had been stolen.

Watton suffered a skull fracture and was under sedation in intensive care for some time, but was not able to overcome his injuries. He died Wednesday, August 31. Family told FOX 13 News Cordero was the last person to be seen with Watton. Cordero was arrested two days after the attack. He denies stealing Watton's vehicle.

Cordero was first charged with aggravated battery on a person over 65-years of age and robbery. He now faces a charge of felony murder in the first degree.
