5-year-old fatally hit by truck while riding bike

- A 5-year-old died after his bicycle apparently veered into the road and in front of an oncoming vehicle.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said it happened in front of a neighbor's residence at 1120 Saddlewood Boulevard in Lakeland just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators said they think 5-year-old Austin Crawford and his 8-year-old sister Abigale Crawford were riding bikes in a neighbor's driveway, when Austin turned and drove into the road.  At the same time, a pick-up truck was driving past and hit the child.

The driver of the truck has been identified as 46-year-old Carol McCallister of Lakeland.

A neighbor told FOX 13 News the child was a sweet, playful boy. The neighbor tried to perform CPR, but the boy died at Lakeland Regional Health.

The investigation is ongoing.
