ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - Funeral services took place Saturday for a St. Petersburg crossing guard who was hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver on November 8th.
Family, friends and hundreds of crossing guards attended the service for 72-year-old David Roundtree at Greater Mount Zion AME Church on 16th Street South.
Police say 21-year-old Charles Walton hit and killed Roundtree while the crossing guard was setting up school zone cones in preparation for dismissal at Mt. Vernon Elementary.
Walton also reportedly hit a pick up truck before hitting the crossing guard, a school zone sign and a small tree - and then kept going several blocks.
A witness had seen the Toyota driving erratically for several blocks before the accident.
Roundtree was pronounced dead at the hospital. He had been a crossing guard for 3 years. No one else was injured.
Walton was charged with DUI manslaughter. An 18 year old female passenger was not charged.
