National Doughnut Day is upon us, Friday June 2, and there are celebrations at doughnut shops across the country.
Doughnut Day was created back in 1938 when the Salvation Army "Doughnut Girls" gave soldiers free coffee and doughnuts along the front lines during WWI and WWII. It became an unofficial "holiday" and is celebrated the first Friday in June. When the volunteers who served them realized it would be hard to serve baked goods, and because they had limited resources, they decided to fry the donuts in soldiers' helmets which boosted the soldiers' morale, according to the Salvation Army.
