Death of 6-month-old under investigation in St. Pete

- Detectives from the Crimes Against Children unit are investigating the death of a 6-month-old in unincorporated St. Petersburg.

According to Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a home in the 3500 block of 51st Avenue North where the infant, 6-month-old Anthony Ford, was found unresponsive in his parents’ bed.

Detectives say sometime after 10:45 a.m. Monday, 33-year-old Antonio Ford placed his infant son on his bed in a back bedroom to take a nap.

Ford was home alone supervising five other children while the baby’s mother, 29-year-old Nina Yates, was away.

Just before 12:30 p.m., Ford sent one of the older children to check on baby Anthony. But they found him on the side of the bed with his head stuck in the opening between the mattress and headboard.

According to PCSO, Ford performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived. The baby was then transported to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital where the infant was pronounced deceased.

Detectives say the infant had a crib at the residence but that he was often allowed to sleep in his parents’ bed.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause and manner of death.

The investigation is ongoing.
