DUI arrest after 2 hit-and-run crashes, 1 potentially fatal

- A man has been arrested following two hit-and-run crashes that took place overnight in North Tampa.

The Florida Highway Patrol says it all started around 1 a.m. when 26-year-old Edwin Rodriguez's 1992 Honda Civic barreled through a construction zone at Orange and Nebraska Avenues, north of Fletcher.

They say the car first collided with construction barricades, in place to protect crews working in the area, and then ended up striking one of the workers on duty.

The Tampa Police Department, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene, and the worker was rushed to Tampa General Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile, troopers say Rodriguez just kept driving, and ended up getting into another accident down the road near Fowler Avenue.

He left the scene of that crash as well and, according to troopers, went to his home in the 10,000 block of North 14th Street.

Tampa Police reportedly received a disturbance call in the area, and ended up spotting his damaged and abandoned car nearby.

Rodriguez was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment, and then officers arrested him for DUI with serious bodily injury and leaving the scene with serious injury.

Lanes on Nebraska Avenue were shut down for several hours, but have since reopened.

FOX 13 will continue with updates as they become available.
