7 families lose homes in overnight apartment fire

- Fourteen people escaped a condo building after an overnight fire in Tampa early Thursday.

The fire started just after 2 a.m. at the Westchester Manor condo complex near North Central Avenue and East Yukon Street. Tampa firefighters arrived and called for backup, managing to control the blaze by 3 a.m.

The building included seven occupied units and one vacant unit. Everyone got out before firefighters arrived and crews kept flames from spreading to other complex buildings.

A Tampa Fire Rescue spokesperson tells FOX 13 seven families lost their homes.

No one was hurt.

Tampa Fire officials say the fire is not suspicious. According to a property manager, a washing machine may have sparked the blaze.

The Red Cross is providing assistance.
