April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, but few people have seen it happen as often as TPD officer Tony Aguiar.

"From putting cream cheese on a bagel, to eating an entire sub, to putting makeup on," he said. "I've seen people drive with laptops in their laps," he added.

In 2014, almost 3,179 people were killed due to distracted driving and another 431,000 were hurt.

"You're so used to do it. Nothing bad happened last time. You might as well do it again," said driver Lisa Diffendale.

"They don't think about how dangerous it is to be distracted, tragedies come from it," said Officer Aguiar.

Tragedies that are completely preventable. That's the goal behind Distracted Driving Awareness month.

"Pay attention when you're driving, make sure you get to where you need to go safely make sure the other people can do the same thing," said the officer.
