CLEARWATER BEACH, Fla. (FOX 13) - The lead defense attorney on a high-profile manslaughter trial may now need legal counsel of his own.
John Trevena, who’s representing Michael Drejka in the controversial shooting death of Markeis McGlockton, was arrested Monday afternoon in Clearwater Beach and charged with domestic battery.
John is accused of hitting, shoving and kicking his ex-wife after he showed up to her apartment to take back items he believed belonged to him. According to his arrest affidavit, things soon became physical.
Meredith, John Trevena’s ex-wife, recorded part of the incident on her cellphone. Officers note in their report that John was seen approaching Meredith and “shoving her back as she tried to retrieve items that he was attempting to take from her apartment that were clearly hers.”
Meredith Trevena told police that her ex-husband also shoved her to the ground and kicked her in the groin when she tried to get back up. In his arrest affidavit, officers said Meredith had visible nail marks, swelling and redness on her hands and wrists that she explained were defensive wounds.
Drejka was released on bond in September, but Trevena is just the latest person working on his trial to end up behind bars.
In December, George Moffett Jr., now the former lead detective on the case, was dismissed from the Pinellas County Sheriff‘s Office after he was accused of arriving drunk to a suspected homicide scene in St. Petersburg. Moffett was arrested by his own fellow officers.
Prior to that, Lysa Clifton, then a member of Drejka’s defense team, removed herself from his case after the Florida Bar launched an investigation into whether she’d inappropriately persuaded Drejka to hire her. A month later, Clifton was arrested on Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa and charged with driving under the influence.
Drejka, was arrested in August and charged with manslaughter when the state attorney’s office rejected his stand your ground claim in the July shooting death of Markeis McGlockton. Drejka shot McGlockton outside a convenience store in Clearwater after McGlockton shoved him to the ground as he argued with McGlockton’s girlfriend in the parking lot.
