LAKE MAGDALENE, Fla. (FOX 13) - Deputies in Hillsborough County are investigating after a body was found inside a car pulled from a retention pond this morning.
The scene is near Prince Street and Florida Avenue, which is just south of Fletcher Avenue. Deputies say one person was dead in the four-door Honda Accord around 9 a.m., but no other details were immediately available.
Investigators would not say if the victim was a male or a female. They are checking fingerprint databases to see if that can lead to a quick identity.
Neighbors say this pond is not very deep, but the sheriff’s office explained why the victim might have ben trapped if they had accidentally driven in.
“It is a pond, but it’s so unused that it’s full of muck and a lot of weeds so when the vehicle went in, it went in pretty far, and it was entrapped in mud, and so our diver had a really hard time getting it out. So that individual might have had a hard time getting out if they were awake when they went in,” HCSO spokesman Danny Alvarez said.
Investigators have been interviewing neighbors. There are only about 10 homes on the short side street, but they’re asking if anyone has outdoor cameras that may have captured what happened last night.
Deputies say one neighbor hearing a “boom” late last evening which could have come from the car going through the fence around the pond.
