Cab driver stabbed to death in St. Petersburg; suspect arrested

- Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal stabbing at a busy St. Petersburg intersection early Thursday morning.

St. Petersburg police arrested 27-year-old Juan Carlos Juares at a residence in unincorporated Pinellas County. Detectives said they identified Juares as a suspect based on witness interviews and evidence.

Police searched for Juares starting around 1 a.m. Thursday morning after getting the call about a seriously injured man lying in the parking lot of a closed Citgo gas station on the corner of 38th Avenue North and 28th Street.

The man was later identified as 60-year-old John Andrew Hutchens,  a cab driver for United Taxi of Clearwater. Officers administered lifesaving measures, but he died at the scene.

Juares fled the scene in Hutchens’ cab, which was later found abandoned near 47th Avenue North and 71st Way. Police say they found Juares around 9:15 p.m. at a residence not far from where the cab was found

The investigation continues.

Anyone with information should call the St. Petersburg Police Department at 727-893-7780.
