Chances of tropical storm increase
TAMPA (FOX 13) - Forecasters are continuing to watch a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico that, at the very least, should bring heavy rain to Florida in the next few days -- and could become the hurricane season's third named storm.
While the clump of showers and storms over the western Caribbean Sea is still disorganized, the National Hurricane Center now says there is a 60-percent chance of tropical development in the next five days.
Most forecast models develop the system into a tropical depression or tropical storm that moves over Florida on Monday or Tuesday, bringing several inches of rain.
"Regardless of development, locally heavy rains and flooding are possible over portions of the Yucatan Peninsula, western Cuba and the Florida Peninsula during the next several days," the NHC forecast warned.
If the disturbance develops into a tropical storm, it would be named Colin.
