Clearwater PD helps 93-yo with home after code citation

- Margo Chauncey met Clearwater Police Sgt. Tim Downes four years ago as the victim of a home invasion and robbery.

A con man wanted more cash for questionable work than she was willing to pay.

"He grabbed the envelope and threw me down against the toilet, and I bled like a pig," she recalled.

Sgt. Downes made friends with Chauncey as her assailant was prosecuted and imprisoned.

"We treat everyone, all the victims, the same, but in dealing with her, she's just a free spirit. She's so friendly" Downes explained.

More recently, Chauncey was befriended by a Clearwater Codes Enforcement officer - who cited her.

"Her house needed painted, so she got a violation for it," Vickie Fletcher confirmed.

After the now-93-year-old asked Fletcher what she needed to do, and mentioned Sgt. Downes, a volunteer effort congealed.

"He invited a couple of officers, I invited my family and all of the code enforcement officers and here we are," Fletcher said.

More than a dozen men and women did more than paint the house where Chauncey has lived in since 1951.

"We figured we'd take it to the next level and clean up the whole property while we were here, because she deserves it," Fletcher said.

"They raked, they painted, they got rid of a lot of my clutter," Chauncey added.

They also shared donuts and pizza with her, and gave her a new, expandable cane with a swivel foot.

"Such a great lady and she just needed some help," Downes said. "Sometimes we can't do everything. There's nothing we can do about mortgage payments and things like that, but this was something I knew we could help out with to give back."

The gift also comes with a warranty of sorts.

"It will be the nicest house on this block," Fletcher promised. "We will continue to maintain it. I will make it a point to come by here at least once a week to make sure that she doesn't need anything."

Chauncey's observation: "Unbelievable. I'm overwhelmed, let me tell you."
