Homes spared from Plant City wildfire by fast-acting firefighters

PLANT CITY (FOX 13) - The wildfire that threatened several buildings Friday evening was 90-percent contained just before nightfall according to Hillsborough County fire crews. 

Around 41 acres burned and the flames came too close for comfort to four homes in the area. Thankfully crews were able to draw lines with bulldozers, protecting the homes from burning. Some of the containment lines were drawn through homeowners' yards. 

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and Florida Forest Service crews said they would stay in the area of Bob Smith Avenue and Dormany Road through the night to make sure there were no remaining hot spots. 

There’s no word yet on the cause of the fire, but the lack of rain this spring has led to dry conditions around the state. Several counties, including Hillsborough, are under burn bans to try and minimize fire danger.
