Pinellas County sheriff's investigators said a homeowner, who thought he accidentally shot himself when fending off a robber, was likely shot by the robber's gun.

Deputies said the 66-year-old homeowner told them he was asleep when an intruder broke into his home in the 5700 block of Williams Blvd. Friday.

He told deputies he woke up, got his gun, and then confronted the suspect. The homeowner said he was trying to shoot the burglar, but shot himself in the arm by accident.

Deputies later determined, in the confusion of the incident, it appears the homeowner was shot by a gun that was not the one he had in the home, and it was likely the gunshot of the burglar that injured him.

The burglary suspect took off and hasn't been identified or found.

The homeowner's injury was said to be non-life-threatening.
