Deputies: Man tried to shoot his way into locked hotel room

A man visiting the beach from West Virginia apparently tried to shoot his way into his hotel room after locking himself out, according to Pinellas County deputies.

The sheriff's office said it was called to the Beachcomber Hotel on Gulf Boulevard just before 8 a.m. Thursday. Deputies said they found 35-year-old Charles William Richardson, of Dunbar, W.Va. sitting in the hotel lobby, unarmed.

Deputies talked with hotel staff and Richardson, who was a guest at the hotel. They determined he tried to shoot the lock on his room's door after accidentally locking himself out. He also shot at and shattered a glass window at the hotel "for no apparent reason," according to deputies.

No one was hurt and deputies found the handgun used near Richardson's hotel room. He was arrested and taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

Richardson faces two felony counts of shooting a deadly missile into/at/within an occupied building.
