Documents detail murder charge against girl's mother

BRADENTON (FOX 13) - Keishanna Thomas just stared straight ahead as she appeared on a first-degree murder charge in the death of her daughter, Janiya Thomas.

For two months, she has sat in jail and remained silent.

"Your charges are murder in the first degree -- a capital felony, aggravated child abuse -- a first-degree felony, and abuse of a dead body -- a second-degree felony," the judge read before denying her bond.

Her 11-year-old daughter, Janiya was last seen on June 9, 2014.  An arrest document paints a cruel and brutal picture of the girl's life.

Documents said her mother would leave her in a bathroom and on the toilet because of a medical condition that caused her to soil herself.  The document also revealed that neighbors told investigators they saw a famished and dirty Janiya digging through garbage cans looking for food.

In another disturbing detail, an ex-roommate of Keishanna's told investigators Janiya had been placed in water that contained Clorox and Janiya's body was burned from the chemical.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Janiya's sister told investigators she saw their mother tie Janiya up and dunk her head in water inside the bathroom.  She said one day the bathroom was cleaned and opened.

She never saw Janiya again.

Janiya's lifeless body was found in a freezer her mother dropped off at a relative's home on October 18.

The medical examiner's report stated Janiya weighed only 44 pounds, barely half of what she should weigh. Her right leg was completely broken and there were signs she had been tied up.
