Fans pack Clearwater Beach for Super Boat races

The fastest boats in the world were in Clearwater Sunday for the Super Boat National Championship. Thousands of super boat fans packed Clearwater Beach Sunday to check out the sport many call NASCAR on water.

Saint Pete native Marc Granite and the eight-time world champion Miss Geico racing team are experimenting with new twin 2,000 horsepower engines. Sunday’s National Championship race was the first time the Miss Geico team was able to test them out in race conditions.

They started off strong, blowing by the competition in the first lap, but rounding the second turn in just their second lap, an engine problem left the boat stalled in other racers’ wakes. They’ll have 35 days to fix things up before the International Championship in Key West.
