Two people are dead following a collision between a train and a minivan in Polk County.

According to deputies, the crash happened around 3 a.m. Friday morning on U.S. Highway 98 near Western Avenue in Frostproof. A Dodge Caravan, driven by 23-year-old Emily Moncrief of Avon Park, drove through the warning arm and into the 27th car of the passing CSX train.

The impact derailed the train and killed Moncrief along with her passenger, 23-year-old Lyndsay Serey of Sebring, even though both were wearing seatbelts.

Impairment may have been a factor in the crash, according to the sheriff's office. Their investigation is ongoing, with autopsies and blood toxicology pending.
