TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (FOX 13) - Habitat for Humanity Hillsborough County celebrated International Women’s Day with an all-women home repair project for another woman who they don't even know.
Carmila Montalvo has lived in her Temple Terrace home for over 30 years. She has used a wheelchair since 1997, and needed some home upgrades to help her around her home.
Volunteers spent Friday morning doing beautification and accessibility projects on Montalvo’s house including a fresh coat of paint, fence repairs, and building a ramp to her front door.
“This is a very empowering project for women be involved with,” says Habitat Vice President of Resource Development, Melissa Crowther. “Doing a home preservation project, coming out doing landscaping, laying mulch, it takes a lot of work and it does take a little bit of skill to get it done."
Habitat Hillsborough is using International Women’s Day as a kick off for their National Women Build project in April. About 150 women will help build a home from the foundation up, in a ten-week long home build.
