Drivers experienced major delays on Eastbound I-4 after a severe crash early Thursday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol said it happened around 4 a.m. near Branch Forbes Road when a 26-year-old man in a 1999 Lexus drifted from the center lane to the right lane, and collided with a semi truck's trailer.

They are not sure what caused the driver to drift into the other lane, but they say the collision caused his car to flip several times before it came to a stop in the center lane.

Troopers initially called it a “possible fatal” crash, but hours later they re-categorized it as a "crash with injuries", saying the driver- who has yet to be identified- was in critical condition at a local hospital.

All eastbound lanes were shut down for more than three hours as clean-up crews and investigators were on scene, but then lanes reopened after 7:30 a.m.

FOX 13 will continue with updates as they become available.
