Forged letter, fake checks leads to Clermont woman's arrest

- A Clermont woman was arrested after writing a fake letter using a state attorney's letterhead claiming she was exonerated on fraud charges, deputies said.

Cornesa Mobley allegedly forged the letter to qualify to rent a home through IPG Realty. She also wrote fraudulent checks, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

In June, Mobley met with a real estate agent at the IPG Realty office on U.S. Highway 192 in Clermont, within Polk County’s jurisdiction. The suspect said she wanted to rent a home on Placidity Avenue in Clermont. She uttered three checks issued from Veterans Coalition of Florida, an organization that doesn’t exist, according to an arrest affidavit. The address associated with the organization also doesn’t exist.

Mobley also discussed concerns on her background check, and uttered a letter to the real estate agent that appeared to be from the State Attorney’s Office exonerating her from her previous felony charges, according to the agency. The top of the letter bears the Great Seal of Florida with the text “Office of the State Attorney 10th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Brian Haas.” The letter ended with “Sincerely Randi DeGarcia.”

The letter said the following:

February 10, 2017

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is to inform requesting party that Cornesa Mobley aka Cornesa Gilliard was exonerated of felony charges of Deposit Account Fraud. Once the investigation was completed the charged (sic) was dropped and the defendant on the case was changed to Willie A. Camel III. Mr. Camel was also charged and convicted of Domestic Violence by Strangulation and the victim was Ms. Mobley.

Analysis of the letter revealed it to be fraudulent. There is also no Randi DeGarcia employed with the State Attorney’s Office, according to the arrest affidavit. The total sum of false checks submitted by Mobley was $5,250. She faces multiple charges including grand theft and scheme to defraud.
