Four students from Hillsborough High School will graduate from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis next week.

It's a prestigious school. Of the more than 12,000 people who will apply this year, just 10 percent will get in. The fact that so many students from the same school and the same class are graduating makes their story even more rare.

John Garza, Adam Montgomery, Christian Montgomery, and Anna Paz all graduated from Hillsborough High's IB program. Notably distinguished is Anna Paz. She's the current brigade commander, a position only available to student-athletes.

Anna is a four-year member of the women’s rowing program. It's a big responsibility. She handles the day-to-day activities and the professional training of the 4,400-person brigade of midshipmen. The academy told me she earned the role as a result of her outstanding leadership performances over her seven semesters in Annapolis.

John Garza will receive a bachelor of science in ocean engineering. Adam Montgomery will receive a bachelor of science in cyber intelligence and Christian Montgomery will receive a bachelor of science in computer engineering and computer science.  They will graduate as junior officers with the United States Navy.

The academy’s more-than 81,000 alumni include one president, 21 members of Congress, five governors, 73 Medal of Honor recipients, two Nobel Prize winners, 52 astronauts, and 4,000 admirals and generals.
