Highlands deputies search for driver after 3-year-old hit by car

Authorities in Highlands County are searching for the driver who struck a child and fled the scene early Saturday evening.

The incident happened on North Lake Avenue in Avon Park shortly after 5 p.m. Deputies said the victim, a 3-year-old, was hit by a white four-door Chevrolet Malibu.

The unidentified child was flown to a Tampa hospital in critical condition.

Deputies are actively searching for the vehicle and driver responsible. The car has tinted windows, a sun roof and a spoiler.
