CLEARWATER, Fla. (FOX 13) - Two people are in critical condition after the driver of a stolen Mercedes AMG crashed into their BMW early Monday morning in Clearwater, police said.
The driver, who allegedly stole the Mercedes and was driving under the influence, was soon arrested at a nearby hotel, police said. Investigators had to close all lanes of Court Street between Hillcrest Avenue and San Remo Avenue for several hours after the 1 a.m. crash.
Police said 28-year-old Corey Feldman stole his friend's Mercedes AMG from a Speedway gas station at Chestnut Street and Fort Harrison Avenue. Feldman, who police said was under the influence, was speeding eastbound on Court Steet when he slammed into the back of a BMW that was stopped at a traffic light.
Investigators say this was not Feldman's first DUI incident.
“It’s difficult for someone who is sitting in an intersection at a red light who gets rear-ended and severely injured from someone who is a habitual DUI offender,” said. Clearwater Police Department Spokeswoman Joelle Castelli.
The male driver of the BMW and his female passenger were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.
Feldman ran away from the crash scene, police said, but he was located at a nearby hotel. He faces several charges including DUI with serious injuries, leaving the scene of a crash, grand theft auto, careless driving, and driving with a suspended license.
Police have not identified the victims.
