TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - It has been 11 days since Bernard Smiley was hit by a car while was crossing the street in his wheelchair.
The driver did not stop. Surveillance video of the suspected vehicle has not lead to any tips or arrests.
Smiley was rushed to the hospital after the impact. He died this week from his injuries. That means the already serious charges facing the driver just got even more severe.
“Could not believe a human being could leave an amputee in a wheelchair lying there dying and the person leaves the scene of the accident,” said Robert Smiley, Jr., the victim’s brother.
“Previously we were looking at a hit and run with serious bodily injury, now its hit and run with death,” said Tampa police spokesperson Steve Hegarty.
His brother says Smiley was a father of three adult daughters who live out of state. He graduated from South Carolina State back in 1977.
He has held various jobs from working at the IRS to teaching school in Michigan.
He says his brother had been homeless for less than six months before someone took his life and has yet to answer for it.
“Look in the mirror and ask yourself: Are you living right now? If you are, do the right thing and turn yourself in,” Smiley said.
