Improvised spike strips placed on driveways in North Tampa neighborhood

TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - Residents in one North Tampa neighborhood are out hundreds of dollars after running over makeshift spike strips that someone put on their driveways.

According to detectives with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the contraptions were made using nails, which were punctured through a garden hose, and then placed on the driveways.

Deputies went door-to-door Thursday evening interviewing victims.

“Who would think of something to make a device like that? It’s made to inflict harm,” said Craig Parchuke, who had to replace three of his tires. "$700; it wasn’t a happy Wednesday."

“They got me with my guard down...It was dark, I was running late for work, I wasn’t aware of my surroundings,” said Kimberly Nuttal, another victim.

Residents say they have no idea who made the tire-puncturing devices or why they placed it on driveways along White Elk Loop in Tampa.

No one got hurt and neighbors say that's all that matters. They do, however, want to warn others and alert them to be on the lookout.

"We just don’t want this to happen again, not [only] in our neighborhood, but any neighborhood,” said Parchuke.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says it's unclear who may be behind the incident. Deputies are working with neighbors to get surveillance video, which could reveal a potential suspect.
