CLEARWATER, Fla. (FOX 13) - Witness testimony continued Tuesday in the John Jonchuck murder trial in Pinellas County.
Opening statements took place Monday afternoon as the murder trial finally began. Last week, a jury of seven women and nine men were selected. The defense will have to prove to the jury that Jonchuck was insane when he threw his daughter, Phoebe, off the bridge in January of 2015.
For about two years after Phoebe’s death, Jonchuck was found incompetent to stand trial and received treatment from a state mental hospital. In 2017, doctors said he was ready to face the law.
On Tuesday, several witness took the stand, all of them were law enforcement officers, except one, his mother.
Prosecutors questioned Michele Jonchuck about whether or not Phoebe was able to swim. She told them Phoebe could not.
Her appearance was brief, but she is expected to be called again later in the trial.
Another interesting moment during Tuesday's proceedings was when the defense showed Jonchuck's Bible. Jonchuck has been carrying the massive Swedish Bible since around the time of Phoebe’s death. The Bible had been referred to several times, but this was the first time it had actually been seen.
The trial continues Wednesday at 9 a.m.
