Lakeland bicyclist dies in traffic crash

- A pedestrian passed away early Tuesday morning following a traffic crash in Lakeland, police said.

Just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, a black 2017 Nissan Altima was traveling on the inside lane of U.S. Highway 98 North approaching Griffin Road, according to the Lakeland Police Department. Around the same time, 46-year-old Denise Chapple, who was wearing dark clothing, was crossing the roadway with a bicycle in a marked crosswalk.

The Nissan collided with the Lakeland woman, police said. First responders arrived, but she passed away at the scene. The intersection was closed for nearly four hours, but has since reopened.

No charges have been filed, police said, but the investigation is ongoing.
