Lithia crossing guard could be 'National Crossing Guard of the Year'

- A local woman has been nominated for "National Crossing Guard of the Year."

Debbie Caputo is one of 55 finalists in the contest, sponsored by the website, Safe Kids Worldwide. She works outside of Fishhawk Creek Elementary School in Lithia, and administrators nominated her.

They say, "Miss Debbie always greets kids with a smile, a high five, or even a hug.

She has a little fun ritual with them, calling the crosswalk her "magic carpet," and telling the kids to wait for her magical words, "Okie dokie."

Voting runs through January 31 on the Safe Kids website
