Man dies after diving into shallow water

- A 49-year-old man died Sunday after he jumped from a boat into shallow water off Three Rooker Island.

Marine deputies tried to save the man, identified as Michael Steller, of Clearwater, who was unconscious when they arrived. 

Witnesses said Steller jumped from a pontoon boat, which was anchored on the north end of the island, into water that was only four-feet deep. Deputies say some Good Samaritans pulled Steller from the water and began life-saving measures.

Palm Harbor Fireboat 68 responded and the patient was taken to Florida Hospital North Pinellas, where he later died.

Deputies believe alcohol was a factor in this incident.
