More drug-laced candy found after 2 arrested
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - Two students were arrested Tuesday by Gulfport police in connection to drug-laced gummy candies responsible for sickening five students at a Pinellas County high school.
It happened Monday at Boca Ciega High School.
Seven total students were involved in the incident. Gulfport police said five ate the candies and were taken to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital - four by ambulance. They have since been released and their parents were notified.
Meanwhile, two students have been charged with second degree felonies for delivering a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.
A third arrest was pending for the same offense. Police said only the three students involved in bringing the candy to school would face criminal charges. The other students will face consequences at school.
Furthering concern among parents of students in Pinellas County, St. Petersburg Police Vice and Narcotics Division said Tuesday, it confiscated a number of THC-laced treats during an ongoing investigation.
The treats were described as "marshmallow/cereal type treats, gummies, and lollipops laced with high concentrations of THC."
"In light of the recent arrests by the Gulfport Police Dept., we want to release photos and video of the treats as a warning to parents. Please be on the look-out for suspicious snacks. The voice on the videolink is that of an undercover officer."
Gulfport police said they believe the drug-laced candy may have been made by the student who distributed it.
One student said her 16-year-old friend, who ate the candy in class, did not know it contained drugs.
"She was dazing, she had her head down, she was kind of in a trance. You couldn't really talk to her. She couldn't function well. She was kind of just real slow, kind of," said the student.
None of the students were identified because they were minors.
The school was working with the Gulfport Police Department, which is investigating the incident.
