Mosaic reports 50,000 gallon spill at Plant City plant

About 50,000 gallons of process water were spilled from Mosaic's Plant City plant Saturday.

The company released the information, per Governor Rick Scott's order for public notification of such spills. Mosaic said a pump that circulates process water at our Plant City fertilizer manufacturing facility malfunctioned during routine plant operations on Saturday morning.

That's when approximately 50,000 gallons of the water spilled on to both impervious and pervious surfaces within the facility, Mosaic said. The company said the process water was captured onsite and there were no offsite impacts.

Mosaic said it alerted the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the State Warning Point.

Mosaic is still monitoring the situation at its New Wales plant in Mulberry after 215 million gallons of "slightly radioactive" water leaked into the Florida aquifer when a sinkhole opened under a retention pond.

So far, test results of nearby residents' well water, conducted by an environmental firm hired by Mosaic, showed only trace amounts of Uranium, which is normal in Florida. While the results were good news, neighbors weren't convinced their water would remain safe.

The company maintains no contaminated water left the property and well water has always been safe.
