New Hillsborough DMV kiosks cut down on lines, waiting

A busy day at the Hillsborough County DMV can result in residents waiting for anywhere from ten minutes to several hours. For some, the county has a solution, and it's all thanks to a self-service kiosk that renews your vehicle registration.

“The customer will not have to go up to the counter to get waited on, or wait in the lobby for service," said Doug Belden, Hillsborough's tax collector. “In about two or three minutes, it’ll accept credit cards or cash. You punch in your information, tag number and date of birth, and it’ll produce for you a registration renewal with a decal.”

Arlene Dostie usually waits a few days by mail. But this time, she says, the entire process was done in a few minutes.

“It was so easy to use," Dostie said. "I just put in my plate number, my date of birth. It actually verified that it was my vehicle, and I was very happy for that.”

The kiosks were provided by a vendor at no cost to Belden's office. Right now, three have been set up at the county's busiest offices.

“We anticipate deploying the rest of our eight branches that we currently serve customers in," Belden said.

The following Hillsborough County tax collector offices currently have the kiosks available:

Brandon: 3030 N. Falkenburg Rd.
North Tampa: 3001 University Center Drive
Drew Park: 4100 West Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd.
